Thread: Learning languages.

    Default Learning languages.

    Evening all,

This goes to mainly the ladies here who are multilingual but hoping to get advice from any gents here who have learned a foreign language outside of university/school.

What worked best for you? Learning via apps like Duolingo etc, children's books of that language, immersion trips and so on.

    Thanks in advance!

Find someone you're really attracted to and spend lots of time with them, you'll pick it up in no time a have a blast at the same time.

I speak few languages, some of them, like English, I learnt it first in the university, then speaking with people.
The best thing is to learn, first with books/duolingo/ etc, then start talking with the native speakers.
Most of the languages I learnt, uninformally ,I listened to native speakers, then I remember phrases and I repeat them. Then I learnt how to write and read that language.
If you can travel to that country where they speak the language you want to learn, even better. Spend some time there learning it.

I'd be happy to master the English language but do regret not being able to hold a conversation in Irish anymore.

I always wanted to learn Spanish, don't ask me why. Went to night classes years ago but because of work I couldn't give it the time it needed.

I then retired early in 2016 and started doing one to one lessons in Dublin. My teacher left to go home in 2018 and I started using duolingo. I found it good but the only thing I didn't like is, it uses a lot of latin American Spanish. I then heard of a website called Italki.com. There are a few thousand teachers in whatever language you want. Some of them offer free a introductory lesson. I've been using it now for s year and do my lessons via zoom or skype.

During one of my lessons my teacher recommended another app called Busuu. There are structured lessons on it and I find it good aswell.

Wishing you well on your language learning adventure.

Thank you John! I'm learning French and Arabic... I did French for the Leaving Cert many moons ago but need to freshen up and starting Arabic from scratch. I'd hope to have some of the basics of both languages covered before I start going into lessons

Go see Aylyn in D1 when she's back in February.
She can help you with Arabic.
    Expensive lessons but worth it
