    Hi Steph,

not my area, but these are the up-to date figures from HSE:

    https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/sexuallytran...0Week%2017.pdf

I often think that some punters are paranoid about sti’s from reputable escorts, and get regular screens,….BUT, do they get their blood sugar levels checked, prostate checked, blood pressure checked, bmi checked, colonoscopy, mole check etc. These are the killers.

Don’t get me wrong, regular screening is good, but prioritise please.

Thanks Doc, all checked out and nothing to report, thakfully.
My own thread was not intended to upset (otherwise tittle wuld have been more bombastic), just a lighthearted dig at a knee-jerk ways things are dealt with these days.

Thank you for that Link xx

I based my post on the Link provided by Bukar in his thread .

That article talking of Syphilis Outbreak in Ireland , and the thread not getting

any traction had me post My thread .

That article / and further the article Joy posted : to me seems the concern is well founded ?

But you are correct : everyone should go in for regular physicals and keep track of their own

health status - may that be coronary health , or keeping diabetes at bay etc .

    Good to see you xox

And thank you for posting xxx

Do you feel the reporting of the increasing numbers of this infection is a knee-jerk reaction ?

Anyhow, you’re right, Stephanie, there’s a syphilis outbreak. The sexual health clinics are talking about it, I heard a doctor for infectious disease’s bring it up at a party last week, swai are mentioning it, it’s a worry for them all. One of the nurses at the gum clinic reckons it may be in part due to people’s uptake of PREP. I don’t know how true that is, but I wonder.
PREP - Pre exposure prophylactic ? To prevent HIV ? :

: would be perfect storm for all other STI’s ..

Nope, link is there for anyone to see and read, if they want to. I asume that on adult forum like this one people will be well aware of the risks and I have no doubts that advertisers are taking every meassure to protect themselves and that way protect their clients also. Responsible clients will. do the same.
Knee-jerk reaction would be for RTE and governemnt to proclaim cockdown (thanks Tommy) and bar all sexual activity.

I read that in America they found a rise in syphillis and other sti during the first year that people started using prep they reckon the reason was that people are convinced that prep is as safe as condoms so a rise in unprotected sex is showing a rise in all other sti.

    Very good comment.

I am not good at reading a lot of phrases, or long posts, but I understand charts and numbers better.

And let me add, if your data is correct, there were 243 cases of syphilis detected from week 1 to week 17.

Lets say that they only discovered 10 % of all the total cases there is in the country, so they left another 90% undiscovered.(that being very generous)
That gives us a total of 2430 possible cases. (estimated projection)

    https://worldpopulationreview.com/co...and-population

There is 3.7 million sexually active Adults in the country. (maybe less)

lets say 3 million for argument's sake. (generous again)

So 2430 cases in 3.000.000 people = 1 case in 1500 people roughly in that period of time.

There are 10 times more chances than catching Chlamydia than syphilis according to that data.

Yes there is 27 % increase but it jumped from 191 to 243. not huge numbers, by any means.

    CONCLUSION:

"STATISTICS IS THE ART OF TORTURING NUMBERS UNTIL THEY CONFESS WHAT ONE WISHES"

    My 2 cents...

    Here’s some graphs so :

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/...lation-by-age/

    : approximately 2.5 million people between age 25 - 64

    : add in 15 - 25 y olds + 620,000 >>> as you said ~~~ 3 million people that fall

into age categories where one may assume they’re sexually active . Half that number

would be women : 1.5 million

    I dare propose , a large number of 15 - 64 year olds are either in monogamous r/ships ,

or voluntarily or involuntarily celibate . / a large number of women would be raising

families , I doubt many of them would be running around town changing sexual partners

to warrant including them in the ‘sexually active’ ( for the infection spread purposes ) .

So , will we say about Half of the 3 million we could set aside for the purposes of

    crunching numbers ?

So that leaves ~~~ 1.5 .. actually sexually active people in ROI .

Being sexually active does not = having multiple partners , so that number would shrink again .

So 2430 cases to take your example all of a sudden is a much larger percentage , isn’t it ?

To take Your math : it would be One case per ~~~ 750 people / let’s say 800 - to be generous .

    Also :

: take into consideration the ‘pool’ of people who are promiscuous — I would put forth it’s less than 1.5m ?

But all this math is just superfluous posturing .

When all health authorities are concerned - I am concerned .

: I believe the 191 number was for the whole prior year , and the 243 was for just the first Quarter

    of 2021 ?? ( please correct me if I’m wrong , I haven’t looked , this from memory ) .

I’m concerned about Syphilis getting in amongst us and people passing it on without knowing .

So why I say : if you are sexually active , now more than ever ( recently ) you Need to go in for

regular STI screening , go for regular tests and specifically request Syphilis testing .

IF turn up positive , it can be dealt with , with antibiotics . Get tested .

/ chlamydia won’t kill you , + may make women infertile , May cause complications during birth ,

which all are awful . But won’t kill you . / enough to explain to your partner where you got it .
I do what I want. I cannot do otherwise.
