    Default Tokyo 2020

Ireland have made history this evening by beating France in the final of the World Rugby Sevens tournament to book their ticket to the Tokyo Olympics. With full teams in womens` hockey and in the equestrian events also having qualified along with the individual athletes it looks as though Ireland will be sending their largest ever team to an Olympic Games. How many if any medals will they win at the Games?

It`s mainly the mens and womens soccer competitions which always start a few days before the opening ceremony to give enough time to fit in all the games and breaks between them. Unfortunately some athletes have already been ruled out of the Olympics beuse of testing positive for Covid. There are likely to be a good few more over the next 2 and half weeks.

The draw for the 3 balls won`t be made until a day or 2 before the start of the competition next week. Anyway there is no cut in the Olympic golf tournament so barring injury or Covid everyone will get to play 72 holes.

None of the 3 medallists in Rio, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson or Matt Kuchar, will be in Tokyo.

Naomi Osaka lit the Olympic cauldron in Tokyo today. Some of the rowers were in action early today including Sanita Puspure who comfortably won her opening race. Hopefully she will
win a medal over the next week.

A comfortable win in their heat earlier today for the Skibbereen rowers Paul O`Donovan and Fintan McCarthy. Hoppefully O`Donovan will win another medal in the next week to go with his silver from Rio.

A great start to the Games today for the Irish womens` hockey team in their 1st ever Olympic appearance beating South Africa 2-0. They will be facing stronger opposition over the next few days but hopefully they will have a good run in the competition.

Bryson DeChambeau is also out of the Olympics due to testing positive for Covid. He has been replaced by Patrick Reed who also played in the Rio Games. I very much doubt they will be the last big names to have to pull out of the Olympics.
