He kept bad company, he has to answer questions regarding that or allow the rumour mills to consume his reputation. His keeping of bad company is what French Gates took to be the breaking point of their relationship, it is central to this discussion (see OP's OP, infidelity and Epstein). As regards the illegality of what happened, it is not instrumental to my original point: appearing moral and being moral are two completely different things.
