    Question John the genius sexologist

John is a genius and a brilliant sexologist, he knows everything there is to know about sex. He knows all about the male and female physiology relating to sex; he knows every type of behaviour that humans engage in sexually; he understands the function of neurotransmitters in orgasms; sexual dysfunctions such as premature ejaculation and anorgasmia are but pieces of trivia; orientation, identity and sexual development are things about which he could talk at length. John, however, is a virgin; he has only read books and watched documentaries about sex, he has never actually had sex. John is the preeminent authority on all things sex, he knows the science behind human sexual behaviour; every fact, position, body type and personality plus the interplay of all the afore mentioned. Yet John is a virgin.

My question is this: If John leaves his study and has sex for the first time, does he learn anything new?

: From experience : humongous difference between knowing how to perform a medical procedure

having studied it and learnt it inside-out + even top-passed test on it .. ,

..then facing having to Do what you’ve learnt !

Night and day ; some can’t cut it ; some pass out ; leave the profession immediately .

    Same - same :

: it’s Huge difference ‘knowing’ something from Intellectually Knowing , or from having had

‘hands-on’ experience and having comfort and confidence in that experienced knowledge !

Ye can learn all ye want from Books ;-) , won’t make up for spending a fleeting hr in right company x

: or so my ‘Boys’ tell me xx

So, John learns what it feels like to have sex. Good answer, thanks.

Drawing an important distinction between knowing and experiencing something. Really interesting and a great answer.

Both answers are very similar to how I would have answered. Even if I know everything there is to know about a particular thing, the colour red for example, unless I actually see the colour red then I will never know what it feels like to experience it.

There are many answers to the question, I just happen to agree with what is already written. I suppose the conversation could delve a bit deeper into the nature of the distinction between knowing and experiencing and why exactly it feels like something when you experience it rather than just knowing a fact about the same thing.

My own view on the nature of the distinction between knowing something and experiencing something is this:
    1. Knowledge of the world can be gained through the experience of others: I can read a travelogue of one's experience in Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion; watch a surgeon describe human anatomy on a documentary; study a chapter on neuron conductivity in a textbook; read a review on my favourite escort written long before she was my favourite etc.
    2. Every fact that is known(or at least recorded) about the world can be learned without experiencing it one's self.
    EXCEPT
    3. One cannot learn what it feels like to experience something without experiencing it. There seems to be some subjective, qualitative property to conscious experience and its presentation to a conscious subject that cannot be understood unless one actually has the experience. One's conscious experience is presented solely for the one experiencing it, it is unique.
