A helpline for male victims of domestic violence is struggling to cope with the volume of calls because of a 35 percent spike in the numbers seeking help during the pandemic.
Men’s Aid Ireland says it dealt with about 5,500 contacts during 2020, a figure it projects will grow again to 9,000 this year based on a further surge in January and February.
The number is most likely higher as the majority of men in these situations don't talk about it and do not report it. Men who report domestic violence can face social stigma regarding their perceived lack of machismo and other denigrations of their masculinity. Additionally, intimate partner violence (IPV) against men is generally less recognized by society than IPV against women, which can act as a further block to men reporting their situation.
