Yep. If he did make it then it would have being a huge achievement. The two bodies were found years later. Funny nobody knows whether hillary or norgay stood on the summit first either but I reckon it was norgay.

Mallory seems to be the most famous! Andi agree you could never tell if he didn't die on the decent

What an absolute money grabbing country.

so only the rich of the rich can climb it.

i know the season starts in a couple of weeks so expect those rich thrill seeking travellers will be living on that mountain for 2 months.

now i've no experience of climbing but i'd certainly give it a go if i had the money. there is only a 1.4% chance you will die so i'd take my chances!

As for the 2nd highest mountain the world K2, it's 25% chance of death , less than 400 people have reached the summit there & some of those that did died on the decent
Did know all of that, however just to echo the critique of the tone deaf comment about a money grabbing country.

Never judge till you've walked in their shoes. Plus it's clearly too cheap because far too many people are on that mountain.

Clearly never ventured beyond the developed world.

Never been to EBC but have done the Annapurnas and other treks in Nepal.

I thought Annapurna was part of the same area as Everest?

Must have being an interesting experience. Ever think of going higher? There's only two more in the same mountain range.

Well yes I'd live to go to ebc but no higher tbh. I think there are ethical issues with climbing Everest, as there are with visiting Antarctica - a place I'd love to go, but it should be kept a nature reserve

We love stories about people having adventures, Mallory, Shackleton, Columbus etc, from times past when completing these adventures was so much more challenging, transport, equipment, navigation were all so basic. Now we see 3 muppets drive to the north pole in Hilux's, 5 star cruises to the south pole, and yes, choppers off Everest. We are an experience based society in the 1st world, and until these places are preserved with stricter rules they will continue to be over run with experience gatherers.
Maybe Everest should only be available to climbers who have proof of at least 10 highly graded climbs or such? Same with South pole, only available to persons with doctorates in relevant fields?

How about a theme park where you get to experience climbing conditions akin to Everest, K2, the artic circles etc?

Then only let em wear wolley's! 🤣
