It was the last resort to use live ammunition. No matter how well trained you are or whatever other means you have tried to subdue or calm a suspect unfortunately there will always be occasions when these methods don't work and as a last resort live ammunition is the only thing left.
It is a tragedy for all concerned but at this time I don't think anyone should be pointing fingers.

We don't know the full story and probably never will. It's pointless speculating. It is a pity a man died and the colour of his skin is irrelevant.

Correct. We don't know the full story and we never will.
What I do know is that a person with a severe mental illness was not in care. While I accept questions need to be asked of Gardai I think more focus is needed on the resources available to deal with mental health. Every time i walk through Dublin city I see people with major mental health problems sitting on pavements or roaming the streets like zombies. If the money invested on the war on drugs was diverted to mental healthcare we'd be far better off as a country.

From what I can see there is false info being posted here about this person . Which in itself brings others to the conclusion that all is not right / racist

My take ,GSOC are investigating and they are not exactly cosy with the Gardai and those who know recent events will know this so their will be no cover up

It does the cause of racial inequality no good to cry wolf as that idiot actor did in USA awhile back

I see a few who jump to racism automatically here but they are as biased as anyone else at this point and accordingly have no value because we know they will post no matter what

The incident would have been chaotic and v difficult in real time . The man had serious mental heath problems so reasoning with him was not going to be simple
Compassion and justice are what should be in evidence not false info and confirmation bias on all sides

The facts will determine the outcome
The protests may have history of past issues in community , this also needs to be addressed , if their is no history then opputunism would be a valid conclusion which does Racial equality a dis service

If he had mental health issues, then the people responsible for his death are those that allowed him walk around in public carrying machete.
Anyone that thinks it is ok to threaten innocent members of the public with a lethal weapon, need to be removed from society regardless of race or ethnicity.

Doesn't matter what he had, what he was or his past. Same goes for anyone. If you threaten anyone with a dangerous impliment in the presence of armed Gardai you risk being shot.

"The Sex Workers Alliance Ireland wholeheartedly condemn the killing of a young, mentally ill black man yesterday at the hands of Gardaí. George Nkencho's death is the result of the institutional racism that exists in the Gardaí and the state taken to the extreme #BLM"

    @SWAIIreland

Is there a pole taken for escorts for this? Or is it 1 person with a twitter posts whatever they want?

I really do hope SWAI retract this statement and issue an apology to the Gardai.
What would SWAI say if it had been an escort that had been threatened by a machete wielding madman?

SWAI really have ket down sex workers twice now, with this ill advised comment pre judging an incident without access to all the facts, something that sex workers are a victim of, been pre judged by people who do not know the facts surrounding individual sex workers reason for choosing this line of work. The previous time recently they badly let down sex workers eas when they transferred money into individual workers accounts and clearly identified the payments as coming from SWAI.

I'm very surprised and disappointed by this statement issued by SWAI.

What is their reasoning behind this statement and what do they hope to achieve by issuing such a statement ?

Nothing like alienating yourself from the police force at a time when attacks on sex workers are increasing.

A very stupid and ill thought thing to do.
