Americans call the ground floor, the first floor.
A British news reported was talking to a woman about a motel/hotel incident and when mentioned the ground floor, she was replying with her statement and saying the first floor.
You could see he wanted to correct her or say something on that.
Even I wanted to correct her.

British/Irish custom is that the First Floor is the first floor up. The actual "first floor" is called the "Ground floor" and is not called the first floor.
American protocol is that the "Ground Floor" is also the "First Floor"
Does cause confusion. I think most European counties follow the America protocol. The British and Irish system also causes confusion to British and Irish people on occasion.

The easy way to solve the misunderstanding is ask them to jump out the window and see if they are on the ground or soon to be.

some escorts I have seen recently especially EE call the second floor the first floor, not so bad if you know the location
I think most Europeans have the same system as we do that is my understanding Germans definitely do
what I do find slightly confusing though is if there almost two ground floors before the apartments start although haven't found this much in Ireland
The ground floor is the ground floor
The next floor is the first floor
Next is the second floor and so on
