Totally agree. It's hard not to blow this out of perspective.
Lung cancer kills 80% of the people it touches.
Covid 19 kills 2.5%
50,000 people caught it, out of 5 million.or 1% of the population.
I'm not saying lets all have a house party, wear a mask, social distance, but live your life.

Worldwide
41 million infected with 1.1 million dead which is roughly 2.5%
41 million out of a population of 7.8 billion, which is 0.5%.
So it's 2.5% caught it and of them 0.5% died worldwide.
Even your example which is probably the worst case you could find is 2.9% die.
And just over 2% of the population caught it.
In fairness, I see marriages breaking up, people scared out of their minds.
The chances of catching it are pretty low.
Again I'm not saying ignore it, I'm saying it's not right frightening people.
I really hope that poor woman found in the Strawberry beds, and a child in Lucan, aren't as a result of the stress caused by this lockdown.
Very sad either for everyonw involved.

It is an infectious disease with a higher R0 number than the flu, if it is allowed to run rampant in the community more people will get it, a rise in cases equals a rise in hospitalisations and ICU treatment, we have the lowest ICU bed capacity in Europe
France - Paris is in serious trouble with their ICU capacity

If didnt work first time ( just temporary good results at the time) and will be proved didnt worked and the second time (now) I,m afraid third time they will ''dare'' to announce another lockdown for a month+ I,m afraid this will bring out people in the streets. Small business cant takes 3 blows. Not even 2 blows some of them. Leaving aside from the economic disaster the negative impact on the mental help of the population is huge. I didnt see my parents since October last year. I miss them so so much. My father found my mom at 3 am in the bath crying. When he asked her why she is crying she said she is afraid she will die before to see me and ' to not tell me'. she watches the news every day and the fear they plant in people minds is unbelievable. I mean ok it is a virus around, a bad one, let's try to keep safe and protect each other but showing on tv (in Romania) people dead on the street (they said this was in China) and keep showing people with tubes in their throat will not help. yes, they want to show how serious it is.. but one year continuously we have seen only this and hear only this. Enough is enough. Time to think about something who work! and I don't think locking us down in one hand but allow others to move and work will make big difference. Or how u say in English ''cherry-picking'

The percentage is relative. I don't look at the percentage, i look around myself.
What i see is that my mother's direct neighbours got sick, family of 4. Other neighbours as well, a couple across her house. Those 2 households are not socialising with each other, just a note.
Nobody died, but were very sick for long and who knows how many others they have infected. One of them will never be healthy again, developed complications that have lasting effects on him for life. Strong man in his 40's no underlying medical condition.
How is that for percentage..
And there is the million dollar question here, if you caught it, which one are you gonna have? A mild case or a severe one? And will you regain your health 100%? Can you be 100% certain about it? And who are you gonna spread it to before knowing it?
Better to be safe then sorry.

But that is the whole point that is being made, excess deaths from all causes are up because of the virus.
The restrictions that are put in place in order to keep transmission down have a serious impact on the ability to deliver services.
Remember cancer is a co morbidity, allowing the virus to run rampant through a cancer clinic could be disastrous.
Nobody wants this lockdown, but the policies have to look at the whole picture, the overall good.
If we can keep the number of cases low, then the services should be able to manage and get back to some level of normal with the least amount of impact. If we let it run wild like it is now, we will soon be faced with doctors making decisions about who lives and who dies due to capacity issues in hospital - for all diseases!
From various websites;
The overwhelming majority of people do recover from Covid and it is usually mild disease.
The main symptoms are a cough, fever and a loss of sense of smell and most will recuperate at home.
It is estimated that only 1% to 3% of people who catch the virus require hospital treatment.
But, it is more deadly than flu. The number of people that die after catching the virus, known as the infection fatality rate, is about 0.5%. Or one death in every 200 people infected. That is five to 25 times more deadly than a seasonal flu infection.
Influenza kills between 0.02% and 0.1% of people who are infected.
Some people are at higher risk than others. People of any age can die from Covid, but the risks are higher the older you are. Only a tiny fraction of people under the age of 45 die after catching the virus and the risk really picks up after the age of 65. Over 75 are most at risk.
But, as Marsha says, you cannot be 100% sure about anything. You can be lucky or unlucky.
