Iranian Commander Qassem Suleimani Killed In Airstrike On Baghdad Airport
Suleimani is one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East.
Gen. Qassem Suleimani, a senior Iranian commander, was killed in an airstrike on the Baghdad International Airport on Friday, The Associated Press and Reuters reported.
Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a senior Iraqi militia leader, was also killed in the attack.
At least five people have died, according to The New York Times.
“The American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassem Soleimani,” Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesman for Iraq’s government-linked Popular Mobilisation Forces, told Reuters.
The U.S. and Iran both work closely with the Iraqi state and have major presences in the country.
