Olympic hockey Qualifier

The Irish women`s hockey team have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics tonight after a sudden death penalty shootout win over Canada. This follows on from their runners up finish in last year`s World Cup and goes some way to compensate for the controversial loss by the Irish men`s team to the same opposition last weekend. This is the first time that an Irish women`s team will take part in the Olympics in any team sport.

Thats a huge decision but obviously the right one. Its hard luck on all the athletes and competitors who had trained for it. But at the end of the day life is more important than sport.

Yes. The first time this has happened outside of the 2 World Wars. Only a matter of time until all sporting events scheduled for at least the summer months are postponed or cancelled.

The Games have been rescheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021. Hopefully the virus will have disappeared by then.

The Wimbledon tennis championships are the latest large scale sporting event to be cancelled because of the virus. The sporting dominoes are falling one by one.
