Default GB car sticker 'needed for UK drivers in Ireland' after Brexit!

UK-registered cars will need to display a GB sticker in the Republic of Ireland after Brexit, the government has said.

New government advice said the sticker must be displayed in any EU country.

Motorists from the UK driving in the Republic are currently advised to display the sticker, but the rule is not widely enforced.

The advice applies to cars registered in all parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland.

The sticker, a white oval containing the letters GB, standing for Great Britain, must be displayed at the rear of the vehicle.

Northern Ireland is not a part of Great Britain - which is made up of England, Scotland and Wales - but the GB sticker is used for cars from all parts of the UK.

The rule will apply to drivers even if their number plate includes a GB logo.

Not displaying a GB sticker would not invalidate your motor insurance but motorists are urged to comply with relevant requirements, the Association of British Insurers said.

Sinn Féin MP for West Belfast, Paul Maskey, said he would not be displaying one of the stickers on his car.

Many nationalists in Northern Ireland, who identify as Irish rather than British, raised objections on social media to being required to have a GB sticker.

Seamus Leheny of the Freight Transport Association criticised the advice as "frivolous".

The AA said that drivers from the Republic of Ireland are currently required to display Irish identification on their vehicles when travelling to all parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland.

Irish registration plates which incorporate the IRL/EU symbol are acceptable, instead of a sticker.

Owners of Irish-registered vehicles will not need a motor insurance green card to drive in the UK in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Green cards serve as proof of insurance.

The Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland said valid Irish insurance discs would be accepted as proof of insurance for Irish vehicles.

In a no-deal scenario though, UK drivers may still need a green card to drive in the EU, including the Republic.

    As an idea only.

Wouldn't it be simple if all cars had a sticker on the back to where it is registered from?
Not just from certain regions and countries, but from all regions and countries...

It would save a lot of time and hassle.

As for insurance, this is something that all car owners should have and if not, then they must pay a fine of what the insurance cost would be for that year, paying twice over with points added to the license.
With the car then to be taken away.

This I do think should have happened long before Brexit and not just after.

If the law states it, then you would have too.
I myself don't see what the fuzz is about a sticker going on the car.

If you were born in England, but brought up and raised in Ireland all of your life, would you still have place of birth England on your passport?
You would have too, otherwise your passport would be invalid.

Not the same topic, but the same sense.

I am Irish with an Irish passport. Just because I was born in the occupied 6 counties does not make me British.
There will never be a GB sticker on my car, no chance.

I'm half Irish, maybe more than half and know very much of the history between the UK and Ireland.
My father being born and bred in Northern Ireland has also told me many stories.

I honestly believe that too many people hold a grudge over something that happened many years ago, which cannot be change.
If anything happened to you in your days which you remember, then I do understand the frustration.

However, for many people alive today, they are angry about things that happened before they were even born, this I really do think is pretty sad.
That should not in anyway affect your life in any sense at all. If it does, then the problem is not history, but your own.

Whoever in government issued this advice needs a car sticker. One with "IDIOT" on it.

Sure, even before BREXIT, if you are driving a vehicle not registered in the jurisdiction you are driving in, technically you need a code identifying where the car is registered. But this was never enforced anywhere.
The British authorities have already said they will not be enforcing this, and the Irish authorities have said the same.

In any case, I think BREXIT will not happen.

Queen Elizabeth and Mary McAleese did a lot to "bury the hatchet". It should remain buried, no matter how much hurt there still is.

We should have a car sticker. EI. For Emerald Isle, of course!

My take on it is this. Its not needed. It says on the car reg what country it was purchased in. I know that's not why its needed but it solves the problem. This is a waste of money and anyway i thought they had some sort of new technology to deal with vehicles crossing the border.
