Government pretends that it has some decency left and won't support itself from prostitution. If prostitutes are self-employed and pay taxes the government effectively supports itself from sex work and looks had in the eyes of religious voters. Prostitution then gets a ban not as much for moral reasons as for that they don't want people to make money without paying taxes.

I'm 43, most Irish women I know my age or older would be fairly conservative. I've had the pleasure of meeting several Irish ladies in their twenties since I started punting and I must say they are so much more open minded,of course they're going to be more open minded than your average lady given the profession they've chosen but most of them have told their close friends what they do and it's totally accepted, oh to be twenty years younger!!
