I think your question comes across as though we just work ourselves to tiredness or a point that we're not present in our own bodies. A view that society, the media etc takes to dehumanise us. And implying that we somehow make ourselves into machines who's batteries wear out. Myself and others in the industry, if we felt ourselves tired or anything we wouldn't be working. Any other civvie job, such as taxi driving, we may work beyond tiredness to get paid, then chill. But this isn't like that. We give more of ourselves and therefore have to take care of ourselves in different ways.
I think the way you worded this was the problem. At odds with societies view, we have a lot of respect for ourselves and the service we provide. Wondering if we would be 'exhausted' too much to give a decent service makes us sound like objects rather than human beings. You have to understand, if service providers get touchy, that this view is a battle we're fighting constantly.
For the record, I don't think racehorses should be treated that way either.
