From comedians playing politicians thirty years ago ,to the shambolic comical politicians currently in Westminster ,playing political games and some of them waiting to make power grabs themselves.Dislike of the EU/EEC has a long history in Britain from elites in the Tory Party to white van man with his copy of the Sun,soaking up anti Europe rhetoric and propaganda for decades.
England thinks of itself as a nation state,it's a former imperial power and has grand notions of itself and it's place in the world (perhaps grander notions that it deserves in modern times).English nationalism is on the rise and has been fed and stoked by self serving individuals like Johnson and Farage.
Even the opposition leader Corbyn is supposedly and has been for a long time more a Brexiteer than anything.Very difficult if near impossible to gain any sort of agreement in such a divided political situation.
