If a Garda thinks an offence had been committed they can ask for your name and address.Refusal to give a name or giving a false name and address ,in such a case, is an offence.
If they are not happy with the name and address given and any verification (which they will seek)furnished they can detain you and take you to a Garda Station to establish one's real identity.
Think long and hard before going down a fake name route.Could cause you more trouble in the long run and probably best avoided.
