The Sad State of Our Species
We claim to be so intelligent, so evolved. Every marvel of architecture and technology we've created. Creating the means to depart our own planet. And yet, we're still barbaric. Every day acts are carried out to kill or harm innocent, decent people. The big two in my book, terrorism and human trafficking, I struggle to think of crimes that are so devastating to people's lives than they. Using misguided beliefs as an acceptable excuse to cause nothing but terror and destruction. Then there's trafficking, forcing rape on people who have been kidnapped, promised a better life, etc, treating them like animals in a slaughterhouse, as objects, as property, and all in the name of profiting from this suffering. There are no words in existence that can possibly come close to describing how demonic these creatures are. Yes, these crimes and others may be caused by a severe minority of our global population. But it is still an ever lasting stain of pure darkness and evil on our global society, on us as a singular species.
Now to a much lesser extent, there are those in power. Elected officials who make so many promises when desiring the vote of the common folk, and yet when elected almost always backtrack on these promises, choosing instead to bask in their newly acquired power, rejecting common sense and any prior sense that may have had of the common good. Look at the state Ireland. The single biggest joke of a health service in the Western world, yet those with the power to effect change just sit on their arses doing sweet fuck all about it. The same with the homeless crisis, and perhaps most especially, the dealings with the EU in recent years. Every time the EU came calling, good old Enda Kenny bent over without hesitation, without any consideration for the country he was supposedly the leader of. The criminalisation law brought in last year. Choosing to listen to ONLY one side of the story, completely ignoring and patronising anyone on the other side that dared speak against them. Refusing to listen to actual facts, instead eating up blatant fabrications from people of bronze age mentalities.
We treat, slaughter, and manipulate each other in droves. And we have done for millenia. We threaten each other with war. 2018 and there are still far too many parts of the world where homosexuality is considered a crime, where women are treated as objects and not people, where the idea of destroying those who dare defy your beliefs are encouraged. Since the dawn of modern Homo sapiens, since the time we shared this planet briefly with our now ancient cousin the neanderthal. All these ten's of thousands of years..... Are we really so different now than we were then? Apart from technology, knowledge, what else has changed? I dare say we are no wiser now than we were at any age in our history, and truly the Dark Ages are still alive and kicking.
And that's just what we've done to ourselves. What about all those species of animals, planets, etc that have gone extinct because of us? Because of our thirst for sport and profit? Our hunger for land? The incalculable areas of forest and natural habitats we have destroyed to benefit ourselves? How our activities have impacted on the planet as a whole. I really couldn't care less whether you believe that we've had an affect on the climate. We're not special, no matter how much we believe we are. We are simply one of many whom call this planet home. But there is one major difference between us and every other known form of life that has ever existed on Earth... we are the first species that actually deserves extinction.
