    1872:Brigham Young ,who led the Mormons after the death of their founder Joseph Smith,marries his fifty fifth wife ,aged 71,in Salt Lake City.
    The mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints later goes on to repudiate polygamy.

    1914:Battle of the Falkland Islands. Royal Navy sinks several German ships.

    1915:The poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae is published pseudonymously.

    1921:Eamonn DeValera publically rejects the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

    1941:US President ,F.D.R.,delivers the famous "day of infamy" speech to Congress-one day after the Pearl Harbor attack.

    1941:US and Britain declare war on Japan.
