All these diet aids will help but won't stop it because from what your saying of a lot of walking and an old injury. If its a muscle issue it will hurt evrytime you use it. Soreness and stiffness on waking is a tendon issue. Tendons have poor blood supply and that's why it stiffens or weakens during the night ,because your not moving it so poor blood supply. Strengthening the area so it can cope with more than the norm is the trick. Poor posture as in leaning to one side more than the other or one leg slightly shorter or a lax or dropped hip can cause this too. By the way a shoulder issue which is usually caused by the mid back posture can cause an issue in the opposite sides hip. :-)
Strengthen it you lazy bastard,
Westside.

I won't have a dog for 12 days as he is being taken to a doggy hotel with his brother today.
So I know I will be resting a lot now.
I have Osgood Schlatters in both knees, the right knee being much worse due to twisting it several times.
I have not been to the gym for a while, but thinking of going back again.
My posture use to be quite poor, but in the pass few years, it's been much better.

If it's a standard cramp, I think you need salt. If I have had a really hard days exercise, like a long session of squash or skiing, I lick some table salt before going to bed. Not particularly nice, but it works.
When the cramp comes, the only way to get immediate relief is to stretch the muscle in question. If a calf, put your foot flat on the floor and press the leg forward, holding it until the cramp stops.
Good luck.

Yep that was me last summer, cramping up on the middle of night, pain lasted for a few days after. Taking vitamins and drinking more water seems to have sorted me. PS it also happened when I was with one of the ladies and also had to jump around the room to get rid of the pain lol
