Yes, it is illegal there(apart from regulated brothels in 8 rural counties in Nevada) and it is now illegal in both Irish jurisdictions. There may be a little exemption here for an escort, alone, indoors(but not the client. This single escort exemption does not apply in the US, yet despite its illegality, there are sex workers, escorts etc across the USA.
IN Britain, what continues is the same and similar to what was in Ireland prior to 1/6/2015.
In the US, "prostitution" is regulated on a state by state basis and not at Federal level. It is illegal for both sides to the transaction, streetwalking and pimps are illegal across the States, yet will probably be found in most areas in one form or another.
Prohibition of prostitution and prohibition on drugs have been about as successful as their alcohol prohibition of 1919/1933.
Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Louisiana is the only state that may require convicted prostitutes to register as sex offenders-especially if they offered oral or anal services, but then, it is the deep South.
Also some places in the US operate "John" schools for those found purchasing sex.
Another interesting fact on there,
the highest death rate at work in the US occurs among fishery workers(similar worldwide, followed by mining, agriculture, construction etc).
A survey mentioned on Wickpedia quotes a death rate among sex workers as three times higher than that for the relatively dangerous occupation of fishermen.
The US has a large stripe of conservatism and both Protestant /Catholic moralism, from previous centuries in its public and ruling faces-a bit similar to Ireland in many ways.
And finally, in the years running up to the "new law" here, people were quoting the" Swedish Model" till they were blue in the face, and others were listening to the Swedish model till they were blue in the ears.
Yes, we should pay attention to what goes on in Europe and the rest of the world, but our true cultural milieu is the English speaking world and we should be paying especial attention to how places like Britain, Australia, New Zealand conduct their affairs in sex work and other matters.
