Martin was a man who was brave enough to take up the defence of his community against thugs, and brave enough to face his opponents in debate, and earn their respect in both areas of conflict. Yes the troubles spiralled out of control , and Martin had his share of blame, but unlike many others , he did not run away from his responsibility. I am sure that if he were the coward that some claim, he would be on here talking shite behind an anonymous user name

I agree with most of what you say except for calling him a hero. Brave yes, but heros don't get involved in killing innocents, whatever the circumstances.

He was the right man for his time though, and I think perhaps no one else had the combination of Republican credentials, political talent and charisma to bring people close enough together. Our problem over the years was that most of the people arguing for peace were too moderate to be listened to. Martin was one of a handful of key players. Mo Mowlam and David Trimble also made big contributions. Big Ian is another that will cause rows, but it took a unlikely combination of personalities to finally get real progress.

Most of the armchair warriors, here and elsewhere, would not have had the ability, force of personality and resolution to bring the bulk of a potent, secret , militant organisation, to largely, a position of quietude and decommission.
And McGuinness possibly had more standing and clout with the IRA than Adams.
Without McGuinness and those mentioned in the thread above, and some others, then the hurlers on the ditch (here as elsewhere), would still be wringing their hands in despair at ongoing conflict and death in NI.

lol Punishment beatings and knee capping went up in his community after the cease fire.
The only respect he earned was from dumb people who wanted someone to stand up for them at any costs.
He was a coward and a liar.

RIP Martin, an enormous loss to this country, I met him twice and he was a gentleman, hopefully his dream for an united Ireland will soon be realized, may he rest in peace.
