do a fresh install of the operating system or if you can't get someone to do it for you, most laptops have a factory install option, just google to see if there's a tutorial video for your specific model, don't over think it, 99.9% of people don't give a feck what you had on it once its no longer on it.

There's a plethora of freely available tools online for recovering data.

If you don't want to reinstall the OS but still want to erase the drive you could use something like DBAN or Hiren's Boot CD.

Data can be retrieved and have done it, got a load of co council laptops with hard disks in them and makes interesting reading, very slack of them not to destroy the hard disks or at least remove them and store securely.

I am getting a new laptop and selling my old one, I had porn videos and other stuff of mine on the harddrive but have formatted it, so is it ok to sell laptop now with the harddrive.

You need to do a "low level" format of the hard disk. This means writing an blank file on every sector of the disc. A quick format will only erase the directories but the files, although invisible, will still be there and recoverable.
