If you have formatted it, you will have lost the operating system and it will need to be put back on. But everything on the disc will be erased.

If it was a"quick format" it is possible but unlikely.
Full format in theory it could be recovered but in practise it is gone completely.
You can "bleach" or "acid wash" the hard disk but it takes a terrible toll on the disk, and takes forever to dry out again.but now im told that information on the HD even if formatted can be got back

Do a fresh install of the operating system or if you can't get someone to do it for you, most laptops have a factory install option, just google to see if there's a tutorial video for your specific model, don't over think it, 99.9% of people don't give a feck what you had on it once its no longer on it.
