My original argument was not that Russia was a great progressive country but that Ireland was a backward country in many ways. Arguing that certain countries (like Russia) are perhaps less progressive than Ireland does not add much to the argument.
Those of us who are Irish perhaps tend to rush to defend our country when it is criticised but sometimes it would be better if we acknowledged we do have problems. Acknowledging a problem is the first step often in trying to tackle it.
Despite Russia’s many problems (and it is a massive country with a large diverse population) I still think generally, the majority of its population are less narrow minded than many Irish people. A lot of Russia's problems at the moment come from one person, (Putin) and his friends.
