I will agree clinical depression is a debilitating illness on a par with any other chronic condition cancer diabetes etc

But there's a lot of crying of wolf like its almost a trend
The "oh no my dog died. write me an antidepressant" culture that goes on

youth of today pouting with some sort of abstract pride that they have a personality disorder

not mention in the states antidepressants are prescribed like vitamin supplements

culture needs an overhaul in terms of lifestyle choices and understanding of general well being

again that being said i repeat genuine clinical depression or any clinical mental illness i would consider just as severe as any other debilitating or life threatening condition

I have never lived with anyone depressed so I have no experience of my own, my ex flatmate went into depression after a cancer treatment and she needs medical follow-ups and medicines , but she has no symptoms of depression with the treatment but if she stop she start go down very easy.
Depression is a silent disease and we must always keep an eye on the people close to us for any change and we also need to take care of ourselves and have the courage to talk to trusted people or to seek a professional even if it is a secret of everyone.

If u want a little insight into the real horrors of mental illness I recommend a 1 hour long documentary on youtube called "children of darkness".

Yes depression appears to be an illness that can come about through situations or bad thought and behavior patterns or sometimes just a chemical imbalance in some people where that person may be completely oblivious to actually being depressed until they are totally overcome by the symptoms.

The unfortunate part of the illness is that greater than one third of suffers never find peace as the drugs used at the moment work only for a certain percentage and certain types of depression.
And worse again for sufferers of other mental illnesses where there is about a 20 percentage remission rate such as with bipolar or schizophrenia.

You guys in Ireland do fortunately have some brilliant minds from trinity college in dublin and the university of dublin.
I believe there is one professor there currently conducting trials for a revolutionary new means to treat depression by way of micro dosing of the recreational drug ketamine which acts on a different neurotransmitter called glutamate than do the currently medically available depression drugs such as prozac which act on serotonin or others from that class that affect monoamine transmitters which is wat antidepression medications are currently limited to

I suppose its important to remember neuropharmacology only came into practice about 40 years ago and widespread practice about 30 years ago previous to which the treatments for mental illness were barbaric such as driving a spike into the corner of the eye into the brain to separate the two frontal lobes known as a lobotomy

As the science evolves more and more and the range of medical option improves we would hope that the figures of those who can be free of depressive symptoms improves more also

Long ago you got no sympathy for this, I was going to jump from a bridge years back and my friends said FFS, If you're going to jump, Jump..even passers by were egging me on to do it...
Times have changed for the better in getting help but depression in young people is still higher than ever, I blame the internet
