The black and tans received their nickname from their combination of British army trousers and police tunics. The were officially "The Royal Irish Constabulary Special Reserve".They were recruited from former enlisted members of the British Army and the bulk of them would have fought in WWI.They numbered roughly 8,000 and the black and tan that inspired their name was a type of beagle.Their function was to assist the RIC and to act as police.
The " Auxies" was another force about 2,000 strong ,recruited from ex-British Army officers who had fought in WWI(many of them having been promoted through the ranks). The Auxiliaries (officially the Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary) were designed to be a counter insurgency group striking at the IRA.By all accounts they were more brutal, vicious and ill disciplined than the "Tans".
Confusion often existed in the public mind between the three groupings ,Auxiliaries,Tans and the RIC proper and which group had been responsible for various actions or atrocities. Both Auxiliaries and Black and Tans were the brainchild of Winston Churchill. They and the RIC were all disbanded in early 1922.

Every time you start a new morning, new month or new year, begin a journey, cross a border, make a transition in life, pass through a doorway or gate-you can invoke the two headed Janus, one head looking back to what has been and one head looking forward to what is to come.
The deity's name is associated with the words January and janitor(originally a door or gatekeeper).
