Yes, they are classified as vermin, non native in Ireland, but are now fairly common. They are partially responsible for the demise of some ground nesting birds, in particular the corncrake.
However a sapphire mink coat made with full pelts from female mink is a beautiful garment and will last a lifetime if looked after.
I guess the faux fur looks so similar now, that if you are challenged you can pretend it's fake

They originate in North America and as you suggest they are capable of causing havoc to European waterbirds.
There are or were about 10/11 licenced fur farms in Ireland. These mink are escapees from these farms or on some cases mink may have been deliberately released from these places.
