He worked hard to win the championship, to capitalise on his good luck this year.
At the age of 31, with a young daughter, he was, perhaps unwilling to make the necessary sacrifices again.
Also, his chances of beating Lewis Hamilton next year looked slim, so perhaps best to leave while at the top.
This will upset the apple-cart with regard to other teams.
Who will replace him?
Do Mercedes want another driver to rival Lewis, or a “number two” driver?
“Number two” drivers, like Eddie Irvine, who just want the money and are happy to act as a “rear gunner” and drive “the wide car”, are less common now.
Imagine the good racing if Fernando Alonso or Sebastian Vettel moved to Mercedes.

It certainly will make at least the start of next season super exciting. Fair play to him, delighted that he managed to bag his world title before retiring.

I think form seeing his interview that he holds his family life and his daughter high on his agenda which is commendable. We don't know what love was like for him within the team — Lewis would not have made it easy for him, that's for sure.
This will be very interesting indeed especially with the new cars which they say will be not only louder, but faster as well. Seb and Lweis — I can't see it myself! As regards to Fernando — he needs to get a good car under him soon. He is a good driver but unfortunately the machinery he has is letting him down.

A credit to NICO ROSBERG and a GREAT CHAMPION he is....
I GLAD to see him win the FIA Formula 1 World Championship....
As I can't stand that Lewis Hamilton as to me he too cocky and showboat....
I think Mercedes will try for Verstappen. He will certainly put the cat among the pidgeons.
But Red Bull have shown many times that they can adapt to new regulations faster than others, so whether the Mercedes engine will keep them so far ahead next year will be interesting to see.
Personally I'd love to see Alonso - reckoned to be the best driver by all the other drivers - in the other Merc. Then we'll see if Hamilton is as good as he thinks he is.
