I think women are more likely to have a 'maternal' or 'parental' perception with regards to age, as we are carers, while men 'generally' are more able to see women sexually and it's a nature thing to pick virile women that could go healthy and full term in pregnancy, so being attracted to young women is quite a base instinct thing to do, even if in this day and age we understand it isn't always appropriate (if they are under 18). While with women we instinctively are attracted to a provider and someone who can take care of us should we get pregnant and that often comes with a more mature man who is accomplished and appears to be in control of his life. (why do you think women like men good at DIY?) or sporty for that matter.
Of course there are those of us that don't follow base instinct and go against the grain, preferring the opposite of what would be seen as useful or self preservation. I'm afraid I would probably come under that category, but then when you get into your 40's men that are younger than yourself (say in their 30's) can be just as capable as those in their 50's, so it broadens your horizons somewhat. I'm certainly not complaining
There is a slight distinction between a base instinct and a basic instinct.
