Cunt, until fairly recently, was an anatomical word like hand or foot, and was certainly not obscene.
Its origins are uncertain but it is certainly very old, perhaps going back to the Romans.
Geoffrey Chaucer’s wife (of the Canterbury Tales) mentions it, and it is not considered obscene.
The word itself could have been a euphemism, from Latin “cuneus” a wedge or triangle. Same word cuneus = wedge, with forma = shape gave us cuneiform and similar words.
It was probably in earlier times pronounced kaint or even quaint.
Unfortunately, at some time it came to be pronounced “KUNT”. Latin and other languages like swear words with an “och” sound in them but Germanic, Scandinavian and English languages prefer short, sharp, swear words that start, and preferably end, with good hard harsh consonants.
CUNT with its “C” and “T” fitted the bill admirably, especially with its meaning.
So, “cunt” became a cunt.
If by fairly recently you mean hundreds of years ago, then fair enough. Chaucer operated in the 1400s. The cu-, qu-, sound may have denoted female type words in earlier Germanic languages e. g. queen, quim.
When the Normans took control of Britain and Ireland they did not introduce the continental noble term '' count '' to thase shores but adopted the Saxon term 'earl' instead. This may have been because of its similarity to the word 'cunt'. However what a count would rule over, a county, did arrive. Other French/Continental noble titles such as Duke, Marquis/Marquess were introduced.
And never forget,
A berk=Berkshire Hunt=cunt.

To me 'cunt' used as a derogatory word refers to a man- the female equivalent is a 'bitch'
We are also often reminded that a cunt is a useful thing !!
