First of all its common that peeps mix up RAM and Hard Disk. Your data is stored on your Hard Disk. RAM is only used to load applications and for screen graphics or for any executable that requires temporary data storage. If you were to be playing high def games and the like then the more RAM the better. To load Word 2GB is more than you need. To load Internet Explorer or Chrome also 2GB is more than you need. To load both at the same time 2GB is still more than you need. But modern operating systems are RAM hungry. Fancy graphics and features can eat up RAM.
A good way to demonstrate RAM usage is to bring up Windows Task Manager (hold down CTRL + ALT + DELETE and choose Start Task Manager) and go to the "Performance" tab. Here you will see how much Memory you are currently using. Leaving this up now load up as many Apps as you like... Google Chrome, Word etc... Watch the memory usage.. If it comes close to your max at any time then you need more RAM. This PC I am using is a 2GB machine, and as it stands I am using 1.12GB of my 2GB max. I have many apps running simultaneously. I have no problems. Big RAm is best for file servers, where each user that logs on will use his own private share of the available RAM.
Hope this helps.
