Use the "personal hotspot" and you can use the data on your tablet
A lot of tablets do allow calls, although you need to check the size of sim that you have, and whether it will go in the chosen tablet, with or without an adapter. Any store selling them could confirm that for you, and sell you a suitable one.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note, which is larger than most phones, but still fits a trouser pocket. My eyes aren't great, but most programs allow you to zoom in when necessary. Again, you can try this sort of thing out in a store - there are usually demo models available.
Good luck.

If it's an iPhone just back your data up in the iCloud and log in from the tablet with the iCloud username and password. It transfers all the data that you want without using a SIM card.
