The only thing is most new recruits to the civil service are not well paid anymore.
And no more big defined benefits pensions either

No matter what job you do you should have a wage that allows you to live life without having to be worried about bills all the time.
Blue my last post was aimed not so much at the LUAS drivers but at my own wages - okay cost of living is considerably more in Dublin but in general on the border here wages are much better south of the border - they're pure shite in the North. And exchange rate is round 1.29 today so sterling is even more shite.

I said in a post earlier that a lot of the big multi nationals in Cork like Apple and EMC are paying workers around 10.so ph and most workers take home pay is around 350pw and to add insult to injury they are on 23month contracts and are let go after that as they don't want them to become full time. Now is that what we want in this country? or should we as a people say no more short time contract work and a minimum wage of at least 12 euro an hour as I don't think that is asking for a whole pile. The problem with most people here is when they see another group of workers getting a pay rise or in this case looking for one they always point to the poorer conditions they are on, instead of being happy for whoever gets a rise as it will not make a difference to them. I feel sorry for any young guys or girls starting off in life today trying to buy a house or getting married as you cannot plan anything with the job conditions of today.

I think it's you that's missing the point here.

The point is we live in a capitalist system. And while it's not perfect it's the best system anyone has come up with. Socialism and communism are all well and good but communism is only fun until you run out of other peoples money.
I'm in favor of socialist healthcare and other services but a 12e minimum wage?!?! Come on! It just leads to never ending inflation. The increase in the cost of day to day goods to cover labour costs will just lead to more demands for higher pay to cover the costs of increasing groceries and other house hold items. And I say that as someone who would benefit from your proposed 12e minimum wage.

Also if the Luas wages go up it will effect a lot of people. It will effect the 90,000 people who use the services everyday as they will need to the cover the cost of the wage increases.

And in Ireland far too many want to become part of the professions law/medicine/whatever, rather than science an technology, which the country needs more of.

Blue Rebel I agree with u wholeheartedly about contract workers on minimum wage- a total fuckin disgrace. Governments both in Dublin & London spout about unemployment levels goin down BUT the poorer in society are getting poorer .
100 years on we still need a revolution !!

If you think a £12 ph wage is excessive as a minimum wage , it is you who is missing the point as that equates to £480 pw before tax prsi and usc so I would expect a single person to take home maybe £370 or £380 ? , now let you try and rent an apt ,feed yourself ,run a car and maybe you will be able to get a Mac Donalds if you have any money left. How you claim Capitalism is the best System when you can see what it did in this country and the world over , I'm afraid capitalism is the cause of the world's problems as it is all about making huge profits and giving all the wealth to a select few. On Your point of the cost of the Luas would Have to increase if the workers get a pay rise, this would not have to happen if the company are just willing to make a little less profit than the huge amount they already make. All I want for everyone is a wage where we can all get along and live and let live. ps I'm beginning to sound like a politican now enough said on this matter.
