The Winged Foot course outside New York is a monster and, with the usual US Open set up with thick rough and with no spectators to trample it down, accuracy in finding the fairways will be crucial. Hard to predict a winner but I think Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm will not be too far away from the top of the leaderboard come the end of play next Sunday. Geoff Ogilvy won the US Open with a score of five over par the last time this course hosted the tournament back in 2006 and there could well be a similar high winning score this time.
The Truth is out there.

At the end of the 1st round Justin Thomas holds a 1 shot lead on -5. Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters, Matthew Wolff are all on -4 while Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood Louis Oosthuizen are all on -3. The pre tournament favourite Dustin Johnson is way down the field on 3 over and may struggle just to make the halfway cut. Unfortunately the same applies to Shane Lowry, Graeme McDowell and the amateur James Sugrue. Probably the real horror show of the round was Phil Mickelson. A 9 over par round of 79 which was the 2nd highest of the entire field means that almost certainly he will be packing his bags after tomorrow. It looks like after finishing runner up 6 times in this Championship he will never get to complete the career Grand Slam of the four Majors.
