Yes that is useful. Thanks. I can't imagine the Dail rejecting the amended Bill, as the four main parties have shown strong support. Do you know what that means in terms of probable timescales, if the Report Stage starts tomorrow?
The report stage is only in the Seanad, it lasts as long as they can debate their amendments put forward (if any). When it passes report stage it is then passed to the Dáil. At the moment there doesn't seem to be a start date in the Dáil so unless the Government make it a priority it may not be passed by the 31st Dáil

In regard to impending legislation, when will the Criminal Justice (Sexual Offences) Bill be brought before the Dáil and will there be sufficient time to deal with it? Obviously, we are near the end of this Government's term. At what stage does the Taoiseach anticipate we will be able to take this Bill? Will there be sufficient time for amendments on what is a very complex issue? Many groups have made submissions on this and are anxious that it would be dealt with.

It is important legislation, as Deputy Coppinger says. It is in the Seanad on Report Stage on Thursday. I cannot say whether the eminent speakers in Seanad Éireann will want to amend it or how long it will take to discuss. When it concludes Report Stage in the Seanad, it will then come here.

I cannot say how long the Seanad will take to deal with Report Stage given there are amendments and Members can have very strongly held views about it. I do not want to do the Seanad's business for it.

A Guillotine Motion or 'Guillotine order' is the common name for an Allocation of Time Motion which is a British House of Commons procedure that can be used to restrict the time set aside for debate during the passage of a bill through the House. Another such method is via a Programme Order, which is a relatively recent innovation.

I'm an optimist, I still hope.
This thread is depressing, or I suppose the reality of this new law is
through the seanad on thursday heres a quote from one senator
'All of us who support the Bill will very much hope that it will see passage through the Dáil in the limited time available to the Government. I know the Minister will do all she can and we will do anything we can to help secure the Bill's passage, because the reforms it provides for are so important. As the Minister said, the Bill is ground-breaking, comprehensive and of such significance that it is vital that we see it passed in the next week or so.'
