Well maybe not the best imho but I travelled with Aer Lingus on holiday a few months ago & they were dreadful - ok more leg room than Ryan Air but had little or no food,duty free ,etc. Very disappointed.

If people had no Ryanair to give out about, they would really have Aer Lingus to give out about
as in the near monopoly, overcharging days of the early 80s.
Ryanair and other budget carriers at least keep the prices of the older established airlines down and allow more people to fly.

As a concept and for what they offer I agree they are needed,as I personally don't want to travel like a sardine I prefer other options when they are available.
