    Question Blood

I was out for lunch today with some of my gay friends and it came up in the conversation about
gay people not being allowed to donate blood.

I asked would they donate blood if it was allowed and they said they would love to.

    So a two part question:-

1 - Do you think its time for the ban to be lifted on gay people to donate blood?

    and

2 - If it was you or a family member that needed blood would you mind if it was from a gay person?

It is true plus other people, they are considered higher risk. Gay people do donate, they just lie on the form. I lie too about visiting escorts.
Giving & receiving blood has to be highly monitored, you can argue that blood is tested before allowed to be used, but extra controls based on people's preferences, I think is fair enough.

Could you elaborate on that a little bit?

I had thought that there was also a ban on donations from people who had lived 5 years or more in the UK during the years when mad cow disease was prevalent (in case someone were carrying the agent of new variant CJD)
Perhaps I'm mistaken or that ban has been lifted.

I think Varadkar has expressed some sympathy for the idea of gay people donating blood and that the issue might be revisited some time in the future.
