I did wonder what you were referring to. I started on AW back 7 years ago and still use it to this day and get very good work from it. I have also used backpage and viva and find them both substandard in comparison. You can't make assessments like that based on a hunch. I have never worked for anyone but myself and I think you can tell when someone has written their own advert or had it created for them. One of the things I dislike about this website is that awful strap line they put at the top of the advert, as they are not my words and not ones I would choose to use for myself. I have much more control with AW and it's a lot more reasonable as well.
You will find that on AW there is less need for Agencies to pretend not to be and it is more to do with the country than the directory, as people will only aim to deceive where there is a need. Therefore I can categorically tell you that you are wrong
