I've typically been an advocate and practitioner of the 'Clean-break Policy' when it comes to break-ups. It avoids all the mess and complicated stuff right out of the equation.
It's like the old adage about ripping the bandange off quickly; it hurts a lot for a moment, but the pain quickly subsides with no lingering on. Just remove it (or them) from your life as completely as possible and move on.
I had a situation like this long ago with my first serious girlfriend. We broke up, and I needed to completely distance myself from her and any reminders of her... But little did I know until later, not one, but 2 of my best mates from back then made a try for my ex-- one of them apparently didn't even bother to wait until we were broken up! The other made his desperate attempts over the next few months, but neither got anywhere with her, as my GF had said to me even before we broke-up that she found them both horribly ugly!
Anyway, those guys both got dismissed after that, willing participants in the clean-break policy process, and all for the better for me.

If my best friend was fucking my ex, I'd sit in the corner and watch.
To anyone that doesn't like me here.
I hope you need to pee 3 times tonight, but that you only wake up twice.
