I have had similar experiences. I think part of it is that you never know the circumstances are when a phone is answered - you may have caught them just in the door and flustered, or outside where acoustics are bad. They may not be understanding your accent well, or may not recognise a name.

A couple if times I have felt the phone call to be a bit flat, but found them lovely and friendly in person, so it does not worry me now.

The most experienced girls are good at managing contacts so that they will always know who it is if you have spoken before - it makes a big difference when you get a warm welcome to your call.

They get a lot of calls ...and a lot of bs in some of them , no doubt.
Short , clear and to the point is probably best.
They may be winding something up or expecting something soon and be under some time pressure and only have a few seconds for the call.

It always helps to speak clearly and not too fast, and to be polite aswell.

It's not fast, as much as no gaps. If you just leave a slight gap between each word then it would be easier to process. Even people with English as a first language find the Cork accent hard to process, despite the fact that the sing songy voice sounds lovely, we're trying to distinguish one word from the other to make sense of it.

I find Cork accent very easy to understand.

If you think the Cork accent is bad, try a Scottish one, particularly the Glaswegian one.

By god, 2 years of living in Scotland (Edinburgh), and the Glaswegian accent is still like a totally different language to me.

quite a few recently have asked me on phone where I'm from, I say Ireland but have said I'm Polish, Lithuanian and Albanian and they all hung up on me, one texted back she would only see Ireland men.
