I presume they do not need it to protect themselves financially - they probably ask you to pay in advance, so there is no risk for them.
The proof of date on is fair enough - advertisers can choose to validate their age, but this is optional. I don't see why they think they need to know your real identity, unless it is seen as putting another obstacle in the way of traffickers.
I have no problem giving my card to a secure server but what I do have a problem with is staff asking me for the same information and all the details one needs to use my ID as ID theft. Not being told why they need all this inforamtion, or what they did with the last ID information that was given in the past? I think I have a right to know what and why its required and they way any website also destroys ID information before requesting other copies.
