As stated above firing shells across the border is a not uncommon occurrence .
A couple of years ago a South Korean naval ship was sunk probably by N. Korean fire and a S. K. Island near the border was also shelled.
This posturing has been going on for decades.
Interestingly , the Korean war of the early 50s has never been officially declared over.
They are merely on permanent "ceasefire".

I went to SK a few years ago had a great time but wouldnt go back, found the taxi drivers in Seoul to be really hostile to westerners, strange but true.
Did prefer the more southerly regions that was much friendlier probably because of the US military bases nearby.
The DMZ was bizarrely interesting though!

As Stalin once put it, numbers is a weapon of its own.He certainly was proven right, and North Korea is using the same doctrine. Its army far outnumbers south Korea, and the US put together , and if you add the support China has always provided, and Russia as well if they are forced to make a choice.
Do the math and you will see that he might be crazy but he is not stupid.
There is a potential for a serious mess over there.

A lot of sabre rattling and bluff going on too. The problem is if someone calls a bluff, the person who made it may stand over it and make good the threat.
