I didn't arrive here as a sex worker, so my point of view may be a little limited to my own experience.
Years after I was setted in, I decided to become an escort and my reasons were:
- I was already in Ireland and too lazy to go somewhere else
- I got sick and tired of always pushing myself, stressing myself in that particular job I was back than, I already gave up a lot to get that job so anything else would have looked like a huge compromise.
I was surprised to see how well it's going. I didn't have much prior knowledge about how well escorts were doing here, what type was in demand or anything. I said I'll give it a try and I did.
In retrospective, I regret all the years I spent in Ireland not being an escort. My first job here was really easy, part time, nice office work, great parties and I left that because of course I wanted more money. If I had any brains back than, I would have kept this easy job for a social cover and did escorting on the site. Back than, rates were higher, general population wasn't so aware of escorts, that means you could much easily work from a hotel or rent an apartment as a single lady (and if not the real job references would have come handy). I could have been now retired and having a job or a business that would really allow me a normal life, as honestly I do miss that.
Even if a little late, it's not all lost. I am going back (again) to college this September and I prepare myself for a different future.
After being an escort, getting to know other ladies and hearing a lot of things, I could say that most foreign ladies that work here as escorts came here because of 2 reasons:
- They were brought here by agencies. Like whoever had girls working for them at the time did so well, they were looking to expand.
- Word of mouth. Like any woman working or consering working as an escort have heard Ireland had an economic boom and they were drawn to try it here. Some exclusively, some touring other countries too. The econimic boom is long gone but habits were created and still mainteined, for as long as it was financially viable.
And by the way, nobody has real stats but Germany, Austria, Spain, UK etc also had a lot of girls coming and working in the sex industry. Ireland was unique from this point of view because the very catholic mentality from years ago didn't encourage more local ladies to become escorts (this has changed slightly lately). Most of other countries were a little more liberated from this point of view and there are a lot more local escorts.
In addition to this, the grey area in regard to legislation, the fact that Ireland is quite safe comparing with others, that most work is done safely indoors etc ... added to the reasons.
