Football in Britain developed our of games often involving hundreds of participants, usually from two different sides of a town or whatever. Hands, feet and fists were used and serious injury could occur Reminders of this are an annual football game in Ashbourne, Derbyshire and the game of "ba " in Orkney .Modern soccer/football derives from the Cambridge rules a cleaned up version for middle and upper class males in the south of England and was of course amateur. It spread to working class males in the North of England, where pay for playing also started to compensate workers taking Saturday off to play.My point is, original English football was more like Gaelic football but more players, more violence and less rules- hands were originally used. The official name of Rugby is Rugby football, and it was as late as the 1870s before it and "soccer "were finally totally separate. Soccer as a term is used where other types of football are also played ,and in my opinion some of other games can often be a better spectator sport than "soccer, Aussie rules for example.

I thought it was a soccer vs GAA discussion. Which GAA player should I have mentioned
I agree. I'd also put Zizou ahead of him.
Fat Ronaldo was brilliant. Completely redefined the cf role. Was brilliant for Barca.
The oft quoted fact that win lose or draw they're all back to work on Monday has little or no bearing on the game you're watching.
