Well then, if you don't know who I have met why suggest they are trying to waste time by offering me a drink — whether it be water. wine, beer or a short?

I find that the classier ladies will always offer you a drink.
Its nowt to do with killing time its about making you feel welcome , more relaxed and it can be used as an ice breaker.
