Thread: trafficked women?

  1. Default trafficked women?

What is this trafficking thing? Are the contract girls who come here on the 50/50 deal considered to be trafficked? I have met hundreds of girls over the years but I am certain that I have never met any girl who did not understand exactly what she was getting into when she came to this country.

Girls tend to open up to me quite easily. I think that I am instantly recognisable as ‘harmless’. I have had many contract girls complain about paying 50% to tour organisers and a couple have complained that they were expected to see too many clients but that is the worst that I have heard.

I am absolutely certain that if I came across a girl who was performing under duress, I would sense it and she would find a way to let her predicament be known to me. The most amazing aspect of the escort scene for me over the last few years has been that all the girls are happy to relax and enjoy themselves. This does not fit with my concept of trafficked girls.

The new law that they are bringing in is ostensibly to protect all these trafficked women. Where are they? Has anyone ever met one?

ps. I am not here very often so I apologise if this topic has been done to death aready

Yeah, it has been done before, but there's no harm in bringing it up every so often.

I too have seen many girls, and have yet to notice anything that even resembles coercion.

I suppose a girl that speaks little English that is brought to work here, given accommodation and is expected to hand over a handling fee could be considered trafficked, but only in so far as they are assisted to cross a border into a foreign country. For the escorts I have visited and for those that I have heard of working here I prefer the term "assisted", but many with an agenda will prefer the word "trafficked".

    Definition of HUMAN TRAFFICKING

: organized criminal activity in which human beings are treated as possessions to be controlled and exploited (as by being forced into prostitution or involuntary labour)
Though I do not have exact figures, nor does anybody as it seems, I would put forward that very few are "trafficked" to the exact definition above. Many surveys, raids and police operations have failed to identify any truly trafficked escorts. But it would still be naďve to think they do not exist.

If I were Minister of Justice in Ireland, with a real concern and intent in helping trafficked escorts, I would do the following:

    1. Legalise prostitution.
    2. Open up concerned citizen advice centres, where clients and escorts may talk to officials/police privately and openly.
    3. Disband Ruhama and use the exorbitant funding to finance their replacement with trained and informed social workers that can offer real help to troubled escorts.

This is the only real way to identify and aid true trafficked escorts.

Whatever about No.1, 2 & 3 should still be considered....

In a recent survey, out of those who participated, less than 1% said that they had been trafficked, which means that the other 99% work of their own accord. However, if you talk to Ruhama, they assume that we are all trafficked, they do not believe that any escort works of her own free will.

I would entirely agree. None of the sex workers I've met appeared in any way coerced and in most cases were more than happy to chat openly and often well over the appointment time. They complained about time wasters, 'do-gooders', the new law and in one case about a reporter, but none of their words or actions suggested coercion.

Probably not that surprising when the actual figures are looked at. According to TORL, there were ''87 trafficked women selling sex in Galway'' just before Christmas, yet when the Gardai raided 23 premises nationwide the following week, not a single trafficked women was found.

It comes down to definition. Legally, coercion needs to be proved and since the majority of sex workers in Ireland are not coerced, the NGOs need to justify their funding by redefining trafficking as simply the movement of sex workers. Unfortunately these definitions are not made clear and the public have little real knowledge on the subject.

The problem with NGOs focusing almost exclusively on sex work and deliberately giving out misinformation is that genuinely coerced victims in other areas, such as labouring, agriculture and childcare are often missed.

Sooner or later there will be an expose done on the trafficking issue, but in the meantime the ones who suffer are the sex workers who are there by choice. For certain organisations, that is of course the whole point.

Many moons ago there were some brothels in dublin that were known to have trafficed girls. These were girls that were usually around 18 with no english and who didnt even know what country they were in. They came also from countries in eastern europe where crime and police were the same so would never approach authorities. I believe thankfully that these days are long gone, will 1example some day pop up, yes probably, but i dont believe is much more than that. On the other hand there are still organised crime brothels and massage parlors being run where i would still wonder on the girls and their ability to say no! In a previous life I have experience in the UK of girls being forced to work to pay off drug debts, i dont see any reason why this wouldnt be happening here too.
Escorts on here arent the issue, unfortuneately there are however a potential for there to be an underground element still working which we need as a society to stamp out and hopefully any new laws would be used to target that sort of thing rather than the escort client relationship.

Coercive human trafficking and brothels are already illegal though.

Trying to target every single sex buyer as well as the serious criminal element you mention can only spread police resources more thinly and less efficiently. A law criminalising the purchase of sex is extremely unlikely to deter those who already knowingly buy sex from a coercively trafficked or underage person.

If the police need more powers to deal with serious criminality, they should be provided with them, but criminalising every sex buyer (most of whom are engaged in an entirely consensual transaction) is not the answer and certainly hasn't worked in Sweden.

I agree completely, its not the law i would bring in and wont tackle these issues.
My note i suppose was more to point out that the risk of trafficking still exists and may even today in ireland to the poster who asked and just a hope that at least this flawed law would be used to tackle such an issue rather than the escort industry and their clients.
In a further point the opinions unfortunately expressed on this site can sometimes appear to dismiss completely the chance of exploitation or trafficking and that just cant be taken for granted.
