IIRC Stun Guns (Tasers etc) are a Restricted Firearm under Irish law. Possible maximum sentence for posession is 7 years and/or €20,000 fine. Same for Pepper or OC spray. None of them can be legally licensed, and "home defence" is not a valid reason for a firearms license under Irish law anyway.

Not saying it's right, or that I agree with it, entirely, but that's the way it is.

IANAL but the law here says you can use "reasonable force". What's reasonable in the circumstances is for the Court to decide, but use of force resulting in death has been found to be reasonable where the person attacked was in fear of their life.
