Not average Mrs Smith. She's the First Lady, she's a subject to Diplomatic Law, FFS!
Scowling??? She was rude as f@. If she was to make a statement, she has, indeed - statement of ignorance and arrogance. Soooo.... American, with all due respect here to some, who happened to be as well, born in the USA.
If Obama wasn't in agreement with whatever is going on in the host country, she should never be there. Her sour face, even displayed all over the world in the news, won't change a thing. We have here not only money talking,
but also customs and laws written zillion years before Obamas and the like left the bush.

If Mr. xagerate wishes to visit places, it is good enough if he follows local ordinary customs. If he chooses not to, it's his own risk. Sometimes it is a cold treatment from locals, but in some places he might get a bit more direct message. Not that I am in a favour of some islamic fashion trends. But TBH I feel slightly uncomfortable in summer myself, when most young men deciding to show off their upper bodies in the sunlight on the streets of Belfast, or Derry. The same applies to shoppers in pj's in any supermarket. I moved on with trackies day or night, somehow.

However, if Mr xagerate would like to visit a place as a journalist or political activist, that will change the whole perspective again. No point mixing our love/hate relationship to burqas with Mrs. Obama's behaviour. It was farcical.

    Sorry, peeps, rant over.

No, I am referring to western cultures, together with Christian European. Check the dates and achievements in the science, especially medicine and mathematics comparing with islamic world. Little warning: we talking here centuries, not decades.

BTW I am not sure what would be worst: racism or patronizing.

It was a message I think.

Agreed. But in our countries (western) you don't get arrested, beaten up & thrown in jail because you don't have the right attire.

I used to think that people should be allowed to do as you want if it was part of there religion.

But marry 12 a year old, where Burkkas?

Do it in your own country.

We try not to oppress people, mostly in the west.

"How then do we get to go to 'their' countries and not pay the most basic respect ?

You always should respect other peoples cultures when visiting there country's.

"When I travel the world , I make it my business to know local customs , and respect them !"

So do I, but it's much harder for women.

And if your visiting our county, respect women.

If anybody thinks I'm being contradictory.

If you come to the west, we slag off everything!

    All Gods.

Don't come here and kill us for it.

As wife of a head of state, visiting another country, she should respect that countries traditions while there. Regardless of the fact that she is from "the most powerful country on earth" she should act like an adult. If all she can do is behave like a sploilt child, then she is not much of a representative. As for not agreeing with a countries stance on human rights, it is a bit rich for a black american leaders wife to snub customs because of their human rights violatations, when her own people of colour are being shot on the streets in her country by her police forces.

Though I agree with you in some respects , it's been established earlier on in the thread that apparently , high ranking

Western women (Merkel , Condi Rice , M. Obama , etc. ) by protocol do not cover their hair when visiting Saudi .

: and to try to bring US domestic misfortunes into this discussion is just 'good-old-school triangulation' of issues.

Would you like to have a discussion on the recent very unfortunate shootings in US ?

Should we start with black being shot by white police ? Should we discuss police officers slain every day , in the line of duty ?

Regardless of race / color ?

How about the number of white criminals that have been shot ? What about black officers committing outright crimes and abuses ?

Where would you like to start ?

But all this for another thread , no ?

Will you start it , or will I ?
