Yes, a few reviews from well known clients are reassuring. If there are mixed reviews from unknown's, you have to read between the lines, maybe take a chance.
I like. Rachael's idea - perhaps more use should be made of the reference system, but we would need to be able to see who had given each reference

I count the number of reviewers' reviews. So 3 good reviews from guys with 20+ reviews trump 30 good reviews from guys with 1 or 2 reviews each.
But as n73 says - visit, ask, ask again, and walk if you're not happy. The best ladies started with 0 reviews.
Plus you can PM previous reviewers to see if they had second thoughts, good or bad.
